Largo, Maryland is a city located in Prince George’s County, Maryland, United States. It is situated in the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria metropolitan area and is part of the larger Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area. The city is located approximately 8 miles east of Washington, D.C. and is the largest city in Prince George’s County. As of the 2010 census, the population of Largo was 9,053.
History
Largo was first settled in the late 1700s by a group of farmers from the area. The area was known as “Largo” due to its large size. The area was originally part of Anne Arundel County, but was annexed by Prince George’s County in 1791. The area was primarily agricultural until the 1950s, when the population began to grow rapidly due to the development of the Washington Metro system.
Geography
Largo is located at 38°51'17"N 76°50'17"W (38.854722, -76.838333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Largo’s economy is largely based on the service industry, with many businesses located in the city. The city is home to several large employers, including the Prince George’s County Public Schools, the University of Maryland Medical Center, and the Prince George’s County Government. The city also has a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 9,053 people, 3,717 households, and 2,521 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,150.3 people per square mile (830.2/km2). There were 4,072 housing units at an average density of 976.2 per square mile (377.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 44.2% White, 37.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 8.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 5.2% from other races, and 4.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.2% of the population.
There were 3,717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
