Cresaptown Summary

Cresaptown is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Allegany County, Maryland, United States. The population was 2,945 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cumberland, MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Cresaptown was first settled in the late 1700s by the Cresap family, who were among the first settlers in the area. The town was originally known as Cresap's Town, and was later shortened to Cresaptown. The town was officially incorporated in 1867.
In the late 1800s, Cresaptown was a thriving industrial center, with several coal mines, a brickyard, and a sawmill. The town was also home to a number of businesses, including a hotel, a general store, and a post office.

Geography

Cresaptown is located at 39°37'17" North, 78°51'45" West (39.6214, -78.8625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.
