Watseka Summary
Watseka is a city located in Iroquois County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,255 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Iroquois County.
History
Watseka was founded in 1834 by William Watseka, a Potawatomi Indian who had been granted a tract of land in the area by the United States government. The city was named after him. The first post office was established in 1837.
In 1854, the Illinois Central Railroad was built through Watseka, connecting it to Chicago and other cities. This helped to spur the growth of the city, and by 1860, the population had grown to 1,000.

Geography
Watseka is located at 40°59′N 87°44′W (40.983, -87.735). According to the 2010 census, Watseka has a total area of 3.9 square miles (10.1 km2), all land.
Economy
Watseka's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several manufacturing companies, including Watseka Foods, Watseka Plastics, and Watseka Metal Products.
The city is also home to several retail stores, including a Walmart Supercenter, a Dollar General, and a Family Dollar.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 5,255 people, 2,093 households, and 1,372 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,346.2 people per square mile (520.2/km2). There were 2,309 housing units at an average density of 590.2 per square mile (228.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 2,093 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,938, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,964 versus $21,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
