Washington Park Summary
Washington Park is a village located in St. Clair County, Illinois, United States. The population was 4,945 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Metro-East region of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area.
History
Washington Park was founded in 1876 by a group of German immigrants. The village was named after George Washington, the first president of the United States. The village was incorporated in 1891.
Geography
Washington Park is located at 38°30′N 90°7′W (38.50, -90.12). According to the 2010 census, Washington Park has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all land.
Economy
Washington Park is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a gas station, a bank, a post office, and several restaurants. The village also has a public library and a community center.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 4,945 people, 1,945 households, and 1,269 families residing in the village. The population density was 3,811.5 people per square mile (1,470.2/km2). There were 2,093 housing units at an average density of 1,611.5 per square mile (621.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 79.2% White, 15.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.2% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 1,945 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were married couples living together, 18.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
