Bud, Illinois is a small town located in Randolph County, Illinois. It is situated on the banks of the Kaskaskia River, about 40 miles east of St. Louis, Missouri. The population of Red Bud was 3,741 at the 2010 census.
History
Red Bud was founded in 1819 by a group of German immigrants led by John George Schott. The town was originally named Schott’s Settlement, but was later changed to Red Bud in 1836. The name was chosen to honor the redbud trees that grew in abundance in the area.
The town was incorporated in 1867 and was the first town in Randolph County to be incorporated. Red Bud was a thriving agricultural community in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The town was home to several businesses, including a flour mill, a brickyard, a sawmill, and a furniture factory.
Geography
Red Bud is located at 38°17′N 89°45′W (38.28, -89.75). According to the 2010 census, the town has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.

Red Bud’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, including a large dairy farm. The town also has several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

As of the 2010 census, there were 3,741 people, 1,521 households, and 1,039 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,711.2 people per square mile (661.2/km2). There were 1,637 housing units at an average density of 741.2 per square mile (286.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 1,521 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
