Ohlman Summary

Ohlman is a small village located in Montgomery County, Illinois. It is situated in the central part of the state, about 25 miles northeast of the city of St. Louis. The village has a population of approximately 500 people and covers an area of 0.6 square miles.

History

The area that is now Ohlman was first settled in the early 1800s by German immigrants. The village was originally known as “Ohlman’s Station”, named after the first settler, John Ohlman. The village was officially incorporated in 1872.
In the late 1800s, Ohlman was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, and a sawmill. The village also had a post office, a general store, and a blacksmith shop.
In the early 1900s, the village began to decline as the railroad bypassed it. The population decreased and many of the businesses closed. In the 1950s, the village was revitalized when the Ohlman-Hillsboro Road was built, connecting the village to the nearby town of Hillsboro.
