Johnsburg Summary

Johnsburg is a village located in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 6,845 at the 2010 census, up from 5,092 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area.

History

Johnsburg was founded in 1836 by John and Sarah Smith, who had moved to the area from New York. The village was named after John Smith, and the first post office was established in 1837. The village was incorporated in 1872.

Geography

Johnsburg is located at 42°20'25" North, 88°20'25" West (42.340278, -88.340278). According to the 2010 census, Johnsburg has a total area of 4.9 square miles (12.7 km2), of which 4.8 square miles (12.5 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

Johnsburg is home to several businesses, including a number of manufacturing companies, a lumber yard, a grocery store, and a variety of restaurants. The village also has a number of small retail stores.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 5,092 people, 1,845 households, and 1,427 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,053.2 people per square mile (406.9/km2). There were 1,902 housing units at an average density of 393.2 per square mile (151.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.90% White, 0.20% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.51% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.90% of the population.
There were 1,845 households, out of which 39.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.3% were non-families. 19.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.76 and the average family size was 3.19.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 28.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 9.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $60,938, and the median income for a family was $67,917. Males had a median income of $50,000 versus $30,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $24,945.
