Irwin, Illinois is a small village located in Iroquois County, Illinois. It is situated in the eastern part of the state, about 40 miles south of Chicago. The village has a population of just over 500 people, and is part of the Iroquois County School District.
History
The area that is now Irwin was first settled in the early 1800s by a group of settlers from New York. The village was originally known as Irwin’s Grove, and was named after the first settler, John Irwin. The village was officially incorporated in 1872.
In the late 1800s, Irwin was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, and a creamery. The village also had a post office, a bank, and a hotel.
In the early 1900s, the village began to decline. The grain elevators and flour mill closed, and the creamery moved to a nearby town. The post office and bank also closed.
Geography
Irwin is located in the eastern part of Iroquois County, Illinois. The village is situated on the Iroquois River, which flows through the village. The village is surrounded by farmland and is located about 40 miles south of Chicago.
