History
Hindsboro was founded in 1854 by William Hinds, a settler from Ohio. The village was originally known as Hindsville, but the name was changed to Hindsboro in 1858. The village was incorporated in 1872.
Geography
Hindsboro is located at 39°51'25" North, 88°14'17" West (39.856944, -88.238056). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.4 square miles (1.0 km2), all land.
Economy
Hindsboro is a small rural community with a limited economy. The village is home to a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants. The village also has a post office.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 517 people, 206 households, and 145 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,279.2 people per square mile (493.2/km2). There were 221 housing units at an average density of 541.2 per square mile (209.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.84% White, 0.19% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.19% Asian, and 0.58% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.58% of the population.
There were 206 households, out of which 33.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.3% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.1% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
