Hartford Summary

Hartford, Illinois is a small village located in Madison County, Illinois. It is situated on the banks of the Mississippi River, just south of the city of Alton. The village has a population of just over 1,000 people and is part of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area.

History

Hartford was first settled in 1819 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The village was originally known as “Hart’s Ford” after the first settler, William Hart. The village was officially incorporated in 1837 and was named after Hartford, Connecticut.
In the late 19th century, Hartford was a thriving river port town. It was home to several factories, including a flour mill, a sawmill, and a brickyard. The village also had a ferry service that connected it to the nearby city of Alton.
