East Gillespie Summary

Gillespie, Illinois is a small town located in Macoupin County, Illinois. It is situated on the banks of the Macoupin Creek, about 25 miles northeast of St. Louis, Missouri. The town was founded in 1855 by William Gillespie, a former slave who had escaped from Kentucky. The town was named after him.

Geography

Gillespie is located at 39°25'N 89°45'W (39.4167, -89.7500). According to the 2010 census, Gillespie has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,845 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,364.2 people per square mile (912.3/km2). There were 1,164 housing units at an average density of 962.2 per square mile (371.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.90% White, 0.53% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.14% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.53% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $32,500 versus $21,250 for females.
