Lee County Summary

Lee County is located in the northwestern corner of Illinois, and is part of the Quad Cities metropolitan area. It is bordered by Whiteside County to the north, Ogle County to the east, DeKalb County to the south, and the Mississippi River to the west. The county seat is Dixon, and the largest city is Sterling.

History

Lee County was formed in 1839 from Ogle County. It was named after General Robert E. Lee, who was the commander of the Confederate Army during the Civil War. The first settlers in the area were mostly of English and German descent. The first county seat was located in Dixon, which was named after John Dixon, a local landowner.
In the late 19th century, the county experienced a period of rapid growth due to the construction of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. This railroad connected the county to the rest of the country, and allowed for the transportation of goods and people.
The county also experienced a period of industrial growth in the early 20th century. This was due to the construction of the Sterling-Rock Falls Bridge, which connected the two cities and allowed for the transportation of goods and people.

Geography

Lee County is located in the northwestern corner of Illinois, and is part of the Quad Cities metropolitan area. It is bordered by Whiteside County to the north, Ogle County to the east, DeKalb County to the south, and the Mississippi River to the west. The county has a total area of 545 square miles, of which 543 square miles is land and 2 square miles is water.
The county is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the northern and western parts. The highest point in the county is located in the northern part, at an elevation of 890 feet. The county is drained by the Rock River, which flows through the western part of the county.

Economy

Lee County has a diverse economy, with a mix of manufacturing, agriculture, and services. The largest employers in the county are the manufacturing sector, which employs about 25% of the workforce, and the health care sector, which employs about 15%.
The manufacturing sector is dominated by the production of automotive parts, food products, and plastics. The health care sector is dominated by the presence of two major hospitals, KSB Hospital in Dixon and CGH Medical Center in Sterling.
Agriculture is also an important part of the economy, with the county being home to a number of farms. The most common crops grown in the county are corn, soybeans, and hay.

As of the 2010 census, Lee County had a population of 36,031. The racial makeup of the county was 92.3% White, 3.2% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.3% of the population.
The median income for a household in the county was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $60,945. The per capita income for the county was $24,845. About 8.3% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
