Carroll County Summary

Carroll County is located in the northwestern corner of the state of Illinois, and is part of the Quad Cities metropolitan area. The county was established in 1839 and named after Charles Carroll of Carrollton, the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence. The county seat is Mount Carroll, and the largest city is Savanna.

Geography

Carroll County is located in the northwestern corner of Illinois, and is bordered by Wisconsin to the north, Jo Daviess County to the east, Whiteside County to the south, and Iowa to the west. The county has a total area of 576 square miles, of which 573 square miles is land and 3.2 square miles is water. The terrain is mostly rolling hills, with the highest point being the summit of Apple River Hill at 1,039 feet above sea level. The county is drained by the Apple River, which flows through the center of the county, and the Mississippi River, which forms the western border.

Carroll County has a humid continental climate, with cold, snowy winters and hot, humid summers. The average annual temperature is 48°F, and the average annual precipitation is 33 inches.

As of the 2010 census, there were 15,387 people, 6,093 households, and 4,092 families residing in the county. The population density was 27 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 97.3% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
