Bethany was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The village was named after the biblical town of Bethany. The first post office was established in 1855.

The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 27.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.3% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who were 65 years of age or older.
