Geography
Hingham is located at 42°14′N 70°52′W (42.23, -70.87). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 28.2 square miles (73.1 km2), of which, 25.2 square miles (65.3 km2) of it is land and 3.0 square miles (7.8 km2) of it (10.67%) is water.
Hingham is bordered by Cohasset to the north, Hull to the east, Weymouth to the southeast, Norwell to the south, and Rockland to the west. Hingham is located on the South Shore of Massachusetts, and is approximately 15 miles (24 km) south of Boston.
History
Hingham was first settled in 1633 by English settlers from Hingham, Norfolk, England. The town was named after the English town of Hingham, which was the birthplace of several of the original settlers. The town was officially incorporated in 1635.
Hingham was an important port in colonial times, and was the site of the first shipyard in the United States. During the American Revolution, Hingham was a major supplier of ships and supplies to the Continental Army.
Economy
Hingham is a residential community with a strong commercial base. The town is home to several large employers, including South Shore Hospital, Hingham Shipyard, and the Hingham Shipyard Marina. The town also has a thriving retail sector, with several shopping centers and a variety of restaurants and stores.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 22,157 people, 8,845 households, and 6,072 families residing in the town. The population density was 876.3 people per square mile (338.3/km2). There were 9,521 housing units at an average density of 376.3 per square mile (145.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 94.2% White, 1.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 2.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.3% of the population.
There were 8,845 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.2% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% were non-families. 22.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 4.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $90,890, and the median income for a family was $106,890. Males had a median income of $71,890 versus $50,890 for females. The per capita income for the town was $45,890. About 2.2% of families and 3.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.7% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
