Plymouth, Michigan is a city located in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. It is located about 8 miles (13 km) west of the city of Detroit. History
Plymouth was first settled in 1825 by a group of settlers from New York. The settlement was originally known as "Three Oaks" due to the abundance of oak trees in the area. The settlement was renamed "Plymouth" in 1827 after the town of Plymouth, Massachusetts. The town was officially incorporated as a village in 1867 and as a city in 1932.
Geography
Plymouth is located at 42°19′N 83°30′W (42.3167, -83.5000). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.50 square miles (11.67 km2), of which 4.48 square miles (11.62 km2) is land and 0.02 square miles (0.05 km2) is water.
Economy
Plymouth is home to the headquarters of the United States auto parts supplier, Johnson Controls, and the North American headquarters of the auto parts supplier, Faurecia. The city is also home to several other automotive-related businesses, including the Plymouth Tube Company, the Plymouth Rubber Company, and the Plymouth Automotive Parts Company.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 9,132 people, 3,845 households, and 2,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,037.2 people per square mile (788.7/km2). There were 4,093 housing units at an average density of 912.2 per square mile (352.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 5.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 3,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $60,945, and the median income for a family was $72,917. Males had a median income of $51,945 versus $37,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $30,945. About 3.2% of families and 4.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.3% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
