Ferrysburg Summary

Ferrysburg is a small city located in Ottawa County, Michigan, United States. It is situated on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, just north of Grand Haven. The city has a population of 2,845 as of the 2010 census.

History

Ferrysburg was first settled in 1837 by a group of Dutch immigrants led by Cornelius Van Lopik. The settlement was originally known as Van Lopik's Landing, and was located at the mouth of the Grand River. The settlement was later renamed Ferrysburg, after the ferry service that operated between the settlement and Grand Haven.
In 1854, Ferrysburg was incorporated as a village. The village grew rapidly, and by 1871 it had a population of over 500. In 1873, Ferrysburg was incorporated as a city.

Geography

Ferrysburg is located at 42°59'N 86°10'W (42.983, -86.167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), of which 1.9 square miles (4.9 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2) is water.

Economy

Ferrysburg's economy is largely based on tourism and recreation. The city is home to several marinas, as well as a number of restaurants and shops. The city also has a number of parks and beaches, which attract visitors from all over the region.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 2,845 people, 1,093 households, and 790 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,491.7 people per square mile (577.2/km2). There were 1,179 housing units at an average density of 614.7 per square mile (236.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,938, and the median income for a family was $51,964. Males had a median income of $37,917 versus $27,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
