Otsego County Summary
Otsego County is a county located in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2010 census, the population was 24,164. The county seat is Gaylord. The county was created by the Michigan Legislature in 1840 and organized in 1875.
History
Otsego County was first inhabited by the Ojibwa people, who were part of the Algonquin Nation. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the early 1800s. The county was officially established in 1840 and was named after the Otsego Lake in New York.
The county was initially sparsely populated, but the population began to grow in the late 1800s with the arrival of settlers from the eastern United States. The county was officially organized in 1875.
Geography
Otsego County is located in the northern part of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. It is bordered by Crawford County to the north, Oscoda County to the east, Montmorency County to the south, and Kalkaska County to the west. The county has a total area of 576 square miles, of which 573 square miles is land and 3.2 square miles is water.
The county is home to several lakes, including Otsego Lake, which is the largest lake in the county. Other lakes include Big Lake, Big Bear Lake, and Little Bear Lake. The county also contains several rivers, including the Au Sable River, which is the longest river in the county.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
The median income for a household in the county was $41,945 and the median income for a family was $50,945. The per capita income for the county was $21,845. About 11.2% of families and 15.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 21.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
