Osceola County Summary

Osceola County is located in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, and is part of the Central Michigan region. It is bordered by Lake Michigan to the west, Mecosta County to the north, Lake County to the east, and Newaygo County to the south. The county seat is Reed City, and the largest city is Evart. As of the 2010 census, the population was 23,528.

History

Osceola County was organized in 1869 from portions of Mecosta and Newaygo counties. It was named after the Seminole leader Osceola, who fought against the United States in the Second Seminole War. The county was originally home to the Ojibwe people, who were displaced by European settlers in the 19th century.

Geography

Osceola County covers an area of 576 square miles, of which 574 square miles is land and 2 square miles is water. The county is located in the Central Michigan region, and is bordered by Lake Michigan to the west, Mecosta County to the north, Lake County to the east, and Newaygo County to the south. The county is mostly flat, with rolling hills in the northern and eastern parts. The highest point in the county is the summit of Big Hill, which has an elevation of 1,092 feet.
The county is home to several rivers and lakes, including the Muskegon River, the Hersey River, and the Chippewa River. The largest lake in the county is Big Lake, which covers an area of 1,890 acres.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.3% of the population.
