History
Oakland County was established in 1819 and was named after the English county of the same name. The county was originally part of the Northwest Territory, and was part of the Michigan Territory when it was formed in 1805. The county was organized in 1820, and the first county seat was established in Pontiac.
Oakland County was an important center of industry during the 19th and 20th centuries. The county was home to the Ford Motor Company, which was founded in 1903 in Dearborn. The county was also home to the Packard Motor Car Company, which was founded in 1899 in Detroit.
Geography
Oakland County is located in the southeastern corner of Michigan, and is bordered by Macomb County to the north, Wayne County to the east, Washtenaw County to the west, and Livingston and Genesee counties to the south. The county covers an area of 907 square miles, and is the second largest county in Michigan.
The county is divided into three distinct regions: the Detroit metropolitan area, the northern suburbs, and the southern suburbs. The Detroit metropolitan area is located in the eastern part of the county and includes the cities of Detroit, Dearborn, and Pontiac.
