Montmorency County Summary
Montmorency County is located in the northeastern part of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. It is bordered by Alpena County to the north, Oscoda County to the east, Alcona County to the south, and Otsego County to the west. The county seat is Atlanta, and the largest city is Hillman. History
The area that is now Montmorency County was originally inhabited by the Ojibwe people. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the early 1800s. The first permanent settlement was established in 1845 by a group of German immigrants. The county was officially organized in 1875 and named after the Duke of Montmorency.
