Bay County Summary

Bay County is located in the east-central region of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. It is bordered by Saginaw County to the north, Midland County to the west, Arenac County to the south, and Lake Huron to the east. History

Bay County was established in 1857 and was named after the Bay of Saginaw, which is located at the mouth of the Saginaw River. The area was originally inhabited by the Ojibwe people, who were later displaced by European settlers. The first permanent settlement in the area was established in 1831 by William and Mary Bancroft, who built a log cabin near the present-day city of Bay City.
The area quickly grew in population and by 1854, the county had a population of over 10,000. The county was officially organized in 1857 and Bay City was chosen as the county seat. The city quickly grew in size and by the late 19th century, it was a major industrial center. The city was home to several large factories, including the Defoe Shipbuilding Company, which built ships for the U.S. Navy during World War II.
