Barry County is located in the southwestern region of Michigan, and is bordered by Kalamazoo County to the north, Calhoun County to the east, Ionia County to the southeast, Kent County to the south, and Allegan County to the west. The highest point in the county is located in the northeast corner, at an elevation of 1,092 feet. The county is home to several rivers, including the Thornapple, Rabbit, and Kalamazoo Rivers.

The racial makeup of the county was 94.2% White, 1.7% African American, 0.5% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.

About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 7.2% of those age 65 or over.

The largest employers in the county are the Barry-Eaton District Health Department, the Barry County Sheriff's Office, and the Barry County Road Commission.
