History
Alcona County was established in 1840 and was named after the Chippewa word “Alcona”, which means “lake”. The county was originally part of Michilimackinac County, which was split into Alpena and Alcona counties in 1840. The county was organized in 1857 and the first county seat was in Glennie. In 1859, the county seat was moved to Harrisville.
The county was largely rural until the late 19th century, when logging and lumbering became the main industries. The county was also home to several small farming communities.
