Wake Village Summary

Wake Village is a city located in Bowie County, Texas, United States. It is part of the Texarkana, Texas–Texarkana, Arkansas Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 5,078 at the 2010 census.

History

Wake Village was founded in the early 1900s by the Wake family, who owned a large amount of land in the area. The family donated land for a school, which was named Wake School. The school was later renamed Wake Village School. The town was officially incorporated in 1949.

Geography

Wake Village is located at 33°27'25" North, 94°2'25" West (33.456944, -94.040278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Wake Village is largely based on the oil and gas industry. The city is home to several oil and gas companies, including Texaco, Chevron, and ExxonMobil. The city also has a number of manufacturing and industrial businesses, including a paper mill and a steel mill.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 4,945 people, 1,845 households, and 1,346 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,179.2 people per square mile (455.7/km2). There were 1,976 housing units at an average density of 472.2 per square mile (182.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.45% White, 25.45% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.61% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 4.17% from other races, and 1.10% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.45% of the population.
There were 1,845 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 23.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.15.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.7% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
