Niederwald is a small town located in Hays County, Texas, United States. It is situated about 25 miles south of Austin and is part of the Austin–Round Rock–San Marcos metropolitan area. The population of Niederwald was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Niederwald was founded in 1876 by German immigrants who had settled in the area. The town was named after the Niederwald Monument, a memorial to the German Revolution of 1848, which was located in the nearby city of New Braunfels. The town was originally known as Niederwald Station, as it was a stop on the Austin and Northwestern Railroad.
In the early 1900s, Niederwald was a thriving community with a population of over 500 people. The town had a post office, a general store, a blacksmith shop, a cotton gin, a school, and several churches.
In the 1950s, the population of Niederwald began to decline as people moved away to larger cities. By the 1970s, the population had dropped to less than 200 people.
