Mullin Summary

Mullin is a small town located in Mills County, Texas, United States. It is situated on the banks of the San Saba River, approximately 30 miles northwest of Brownwood. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.

History

Mullin was founded in 1881 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of San Saba. The town was named after a local rancher, John Mullin. The first post office was established in 1882.
In the early 1900s, Mullin was a thriving community with a population of over 1,000. The town had several stores, a hotel, a bank, a cotton gin, and a school. The town was also home to a number of churches, including the First Baptist Church, which was established in 1883.
In the 1920s, the town began to decline as the population moved away to larger cities. By the 1940s, the population had dropped to just over 500.

Geography

Mullin is located at 31°25'25" North, 98°59'45" West (31.423, -98.996). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Mullin's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms and ranches, as well as a number of small businesses. The town also has a few restaurants and a grocery store.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the town. The population density was 790.3 people per square mile (305.3/km2). There were 241 housing units at an average density of 347.3 per square mile (134.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 88.02% White, 0.37% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 8.90% from other races, and 1.85% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 16.44% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.5% were married couples living together, 9.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 25.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $25,625, and the median income for a family was $30,000. Males had a median income of $25,000 versus $17,500 for females. The per capita income for the town was $13,845. About 16.7% of families and 20.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 25.0% of those under age 18 and 16.7% of those age 65 or over.
