La Feria Summary
La Feria is a city located in Cameron County, Texas, United States. It is part of the Brownsville–Harlingen Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 7,302 at the 2010 census.
History
La Feria was founded in 1904 by the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway. The city was named after the Spanish word for “the fair”, referring to the annual fairs that were held in the area. The city was incorporated in 1911.
Geography
La Feria is located at 26°7′17″N 97°51′17″W (26.121400, -97.854700). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.
Economy
La Feria is a major agricultural center in the Rio Grande Valley. The city is home to a variety of businesses, including a large number of agricultural-related businesses. The city is also home to a number of manufacturing and distribution companies.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 6,845 people, 2,093 households, and 1,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,093.3 people per square mile (1,192.2/km2). There were 2,323 housing units at an average density of 1,053.2 per square mile (406.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.17% White, 0.17% African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 17.90% from other races, and 2.12% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 97.45% of the population.
There were 2,093 households, out of which 44.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 17.7% were non-families. 15.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.26 and the average family size was 3.63.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 33.2% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 18.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $20,938, and the median income for a family was $22,917. Males had a median income of $20,917 versus $15,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $9,072.
