Hemphill Summary
Hemphill is a small city located in Sabine County, Texas, United States. It is situated on the Sabine River, near the Louisiana border. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census.
History
Hemphill was founded in 1858 by William Hemphill, a former Confederate soldier. The town was named after him. The town was originally located on the banks of the Sabine River, but was moved to its current location in 1872 due to flooding.
In 1873, the Texas and Pacific Railway was built through the town, which helped to spur economic growth. The town was incorporated in 1876.

Economy
The economy of Hemphill is largely based on agriculture and timber. The town is home to several timber mills, as well as a number of small businesses.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 294 families residing in the city. The population density was 902.3 people per square mile (348.7/km2). There were 517 housing units at an average density of 427.3 per square mile (164.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 81.90% White, 15.90% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.73% from other races, and 1.20% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.64% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 14.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
