Edinburg Summary
Edinburg, Texas is a city located in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. It is the county seat of Hidalgo County and is part of the McAllen–Edinburg–Mission Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 81,029, making it the ninth-largest city in the state of Texas.
History
Edinburg was founded in 1908 by John Closner, a rancher and businessman from the nearby city of Mission. Closner named the city after his hometown of Edinburgh, Scotland. The city was incorporated in 1919 and has since grown to become the largest city in Hidalgo County.
Geography
Edinburg is located in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas, approximately 20 miles (32 km) west of the city of McAllen. It is situated at the intersection of U.S. Route 281 and State Highway 107. The city is located at the northern edge of the Rio Grande Valley, and is bordered by the cities of McAllen to the east, Pharr to the south, and Mission to the west.
Edinburg is located at 26°18′N 98°10′W (26.30, -98.17). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 28.2 square miles (73.1 km2), of which 28.1 square miles (72.9 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (0.36%) is water.
Economy
Edinburg’s economy is largely based on agriculture, with the city being home to a number of large farms and ranches. The city is also home to a number of manufacturing and distribution centers, as well as a growing number of retail and service businesses.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 81,029 people, 24,844 households, and 19,844 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,876.3 people per square mile (1,114.2/km2). There were 27,844 housing units at an average density of 990.2 per square mile (382.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 77.2% White, 0.9% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 18.7% from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 90.5% of the population.
Out of the 24,844 households, 44.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 17.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.2% were non-families. 18.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.24 and the average family size was 3.71.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 32.2% under the age of 18, 11.3% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 17.9% from 45 to 64, and 10.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 29 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.9 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $27,845, and the median income for a family was $31,845. Males had a median income of $25,845 versus $19,845 for females. The per capita income for the city was $12,845. About 22.2% of families and 25.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 33.3% of those under age 18 and 20.2% of those age 65 or over.
