Bovina is a small town located in Parmer County, Texas, United States. It is situated on the Texas-New Mexico border, approximately 25 miles east of Clovis, New Mexico and 25 miles west of Friona, Texas. The population of Bovina was 1,741 at the 2010 census.
Geography
Bovina is located at 34°37'25" North, 102°30'25" West (34.623607, -102.506890). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
History
Bovina was founded in 1887 by the Texas and New Mexico Railway. The town was named after the Bovina cattle breed, which was popular in the area at the time. The town was incorporated in 1909.
Economy
The economy of Bovina is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several large farms and ranches, as well as a number of small businesses. The town is also home to a number of oil and gas companies.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,741 people, 645 households, and 463 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,440.2 people per square mile (556.2/km2). There were 717 housing units at an average density of 593.2 per square mile (229.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 75.45% White, 0.17% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 22.45% from other races, and 1.60% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 44.45% of the population.
There were 645 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.25.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 30.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
