Franklin County Summary

History

Franklin County was formed in 1786 from parts of Bedford, Henry, and Patrick counties. It was named for Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. The county was originally part of the Fincastle County, which was formed in 1772. The county was divided into three parts in 1776, and Franklin County was created from the western part of Fincastle County.
The county was home to several Native American tribes, including the Monacan, the Saponi, and the Tutelo. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1700s, and the county was officially established in 1786.
