History

Caroline County was formed in 1728 from parts of Essex, King and Queen, and King William counties. It was named for Caroline of Ansbach, the wife of King George II of England. The county was primarily agricultural in its early years, with tobacco being the main crop. During the American Revolution, the county was the site of several battles, including the Battle of Bowling Green in 1781.
In the 19th century, the county’s economy shifted to lumber and manufacturing. The county was home to several sawmills, gristmills, and other industries. The county also had a thriving riverboat trade, with goods being shipped up and down the Rappahannock River.
In the 20th century, the county’s economy shifted again, this time to tourism.
