Trafalgar is a small town located in Johnson County, Indiana, United States. It is situated approximately 25 miles south of Indianapolis and is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The population of Trafalgar was 1,845 at the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Trafalgar was first settled in the early 1800s by a group of settlers from North Carolina. The town was originally known as “New Hope” and was later renamed “Trafalgar” in honor of the Battle of Trafalgar, which was fought in 1805. The town was officially incorporated in 1871.
Geography
Trafalgar is located at 39°30′N 86°14′W (39.50, -86.23). According to the 2010 census, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.2 km2), all land.
Economy
The economy of Trafalgar is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants. The town also has a few small industrial parks, which provide employment for many of the town’s residents.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,541.7 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 771 housing units at an average density of 645.8 per square mile (249.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.3 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $48,750. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females.
