History

Poneto was founded in 1837 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after a local Native American chief, Poneto. The first post office was established in 1838. The town was incorporated in 1867.

In the late 19th century, Poneto was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, a sawmill, and a brickyard. The town also had a railroad station, which was used to transport goods to and from the town.
