Hobart Summary
Hobart, Indiana is a city located in Lake County, Indiana, United States. The population was 29,059 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lake County. Hobart is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is located on the southern shore of Lake Michigan.
History
Hobart was founded in 1849 by settlers from New York and New England. The city was named after Garret Hobart, the 24th Vice President of the United States. The city was incorporated in 1852 and has grown steadily since then.
Geography
Hobart is located at 41°31′N 87°14′W (41.5179, -87.2345). According to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 10.3 square miles (26.7 km2), of which 10.2 square miles (26.4 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.
Economy
Hobart is home to a variety of businesses and industries. The city is home to a number of manufacturing companies, including the Hobart Corporation, which produces commercial food equipment, and the Hobart Institute of Welding Technology, which provides welding training and certification. The city is also home to a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 29,059 people, 11,845 households, and 7,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,845.3 people per square mile (1,101.2/km2). There were 12,845 housing units at an average density of 1,258.2 per square mile (486.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 5.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.2% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.3% of the population.
There were 11,845 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.2% were married couples living together, 13.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $54,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $22,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
