Orange County Summary

Orange County, Indiana is located in the south-central part of the state, and is part of the Bloomington Metropolitan Statistical Area. History

Orange County was formed in 1816 from parts of Knox, Washington, and Clark counties. It was named for William Orange, a Revolutionary War veteran who was an early settler in the area. The first county seat was established in Paoli in 1817.
The county was largely agricultural in the 19th century, with the main crops being corn, wheat, and oats. The first railroad line was built in 1854, connecting Paoli to the Ohio River. This allowed for the development of the county’s coal mining industry, which was a major source of employment in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Geography

Orange County is located in the south-central part of Indiana, and is part of the Bloomington Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is bordered by Lawrence County to the north, Monroe County to the east, Washington County to the south, and Martin County to the west. The county has a total area of 441 square miles, of which 437 square miles is land and 4 square miles is water.
The county is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the northern and western parts. The highest point in the county is located in the northwest corner, at an elevation of 890 feet. The county is drained by the East Fork of the White River, which flows through the center of the county.
