It is bordered by Fountain County to the north, Parke County to the east, Putnam County to the south, and Vermillion County to the west. Geography

Montgomery County covers an area of 437 square miles, of which 434 square miles is land and 3 square miles is water. The county is located in the Central Till Plains region of Indiana, and is characterized by rolling hills and flat plains. The Wabash River forms the western border of the county, and the Sugar Creek flows through the county from north to south. The highest point in the county is located in the northwest corner, at an elevation of 890 feet.
The county is home to several state parks and recreational areas, including Shades State Park, Turkey Run State Park, and Raccoon Lake State Recreation Area. The county also contains several wildlife areas, including the Big Walnut Wildlife Area, the Sugar Creek Wildlife Area, and the Wabash River Wildlife Area.

The racial makeup of the county was 95.3% White, 1.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
