St Matthews Summary

St. Matthews is a town located in Calhoun County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Calhoun County.

History

St. Matthews was founded in 1839 and named after the nearby St. Matthews Episcopal Church. The town was incorporated in 1841 and was the first town in Calhoun County. The town was originally located on the east side of the Congaree River, but was moved to the west side of the river in 1845 due to flooding.
The town was an important trading center in the 19th century, and was home to several cotton mills. The town was also the site of the first public school in Calhoun County, which opened in 1845.
