McBee Summary

McBee, South Carolina is a small town located in the Pee Dee region of the state. It is situated in the northern part of Chesterfield County, about halfway between the cities of Florence and Cheraw. The town was founded in 1883 and named after the McBee family, who were prominent in the area. The population of McBee was 1,092 at the 2010 census.

Geography

McBee is located at 34°37'45" North, 79°59'45" West (34.629, -79.996). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

McBee is a small rural town with a limited economy. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a few restaurants. The town also has a post office and a bank. The town is also home to a few manufacturing companies, including a furniture factory and a textile mill.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,092 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the town. The population density was 908.3 people per square mile (351.2/km2). There were 486 housing units at an average density of 405.0 per square mile (156.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 79.2% White, 17.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.9% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 16.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.09.
