Dentsville Summary

Dentsville is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Richland County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 8,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbia, South Carolina metropolitan area.

History

Dentsville was founded in the early 1900s by the Dents family, who owned a large tract of land in the area. The family sold the land to developers in the 1950s, and the area was quickly developed into a residential community. The area was annexed by the City of Columbia in the 1970s, and is now considered part of the city.

Geography

Dentsville is located at 33°59'25" North, 80°59'45" West (33.990278, -80.995833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Dentsville is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The area is also home to several large employers, including the University of South Carolina, Palmetto Health, and the South Carolina Department of Transportation.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 8,845 people, 3,717 households, and 2,521 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,093.3 people per square mile (807.7/km2). There were 3,945 housing units at an average density of 930.2/sq mi (358.7/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 68.45% White, 28.45% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.90% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.63% from other races, and 1.38% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.45% of the population.
There were 3,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 88.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $41,945, and the median income for a family was $50,945. Males had a median income of $35,945 versus $27,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $20,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
