Oak Grove Summary

Oak Grove is a small city located in Anoka County, Minnesota, United States. The city is situated on the north bank of the Mississippi River, approximately 20 miles north of Minneapolis. The population was 8,719 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Oak Grove was first settled in the late 1800s by German and Scandinavian immigrants. The first post office was established in 1887, and the city was officially incorporated in 1949.
The city was named after a grove of oak trees that were located near the original settlement. The city was originally a farming community, but in the 1950s, the population began to grow as people moved to the area for its proximity to Minneapolis.

Geography

Oak Grove is located at 45°10'17" North, 93°19'45" West (45.1714, -93.3291). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles, all of it land.
The city is located on the north bank of the Mississippi River, and is bordered by the cities of Anoka, Andover, and Ramsey.

Economy

Oak Grove is primarily a residential community, but there are several businesses located in the city. The largest employer is the Anoka County government, which employs over 1,000 people. Other major employers include the Anoka-Hennepin School District, the Anoka County Library, and the Anoka County Parks and Recreation Department.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 8,719 people, 3,093 households, and 2,092 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,092.2 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 2.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.3% of the population.
There were 3,093 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $54,917, and the median income for a family was $63,917. Males had a median income of $41,917 versus $31,917 for females.
