History
The area that is now Pipestone County was first inhabited by the Dakota Sioux, who used the area for hunting and gathering. The first white settlers arrived in the area in the late 1850s, and the county was officially organized in 1857. The county was named for the pipestone quarries located in the area, which were used by the Dakota Sioux to make pipes for religious ceremonies.
The county was largely agricultural in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with the main crops being wheat, corn, and oats. The county also had a thriving dairy industry, and several cheese factories were established in the area.
