Morrison County Summary

Morrison County is a county located in the central part of the state of Minnesota. It is part of the Brainerd Micropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population was 33,198. The county seat is Little Falls.

History

Morrison County was established in 1856 and was named after William Morrison, a member of the Minnesota Territorial Legislature. The county was originally part of Benton County, but was split off in 1856. The first settlers arrived in the area in 1854, and the county was organized in 1856.

Geography

Morrison County is located in the central part of Minnesota. It is bordered by Benton County to the north, Mille Lacs County to the east, Kanabec County to the south, and Crow Wing County to the west. The county has a total area of 576 square miles, of which 571 square miles is land and 5.2 square miles is water.
The county is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the northern part. The highest point in the county is located in the northwest corner, at an elevation of 1,541 feet. The county is drained by the Mississippi River, which forms the western border of the county.

Economy

The economy of Morrison County is largely based on agriculture. The county is home to a number of dairy farms, as well as beef and hog farms. The county also has a number of small businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries.
The county is also home to a number of tourist attractions, including the Charles A. Lindbergh Historic Site, the Great River Road National Scenic Byway, and the Mississippi River.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 33,198 people, 12,945 households, and 8,845 families living in the county. The population density was 58.2 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 97.2% White, 0.5% Black or African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.5% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
The median income for a household in the county was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $54,945. The per capita income for the county was $21,945. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
Morrison County is served by two school districts: Little Falls Public Schools and Royalton Public Schools. The county is also home to a number of private schools, including St. Mary's Catholic School and St. John's Lutheran School.
