History

Kanabec County was established in 1858 and was named after the Ojibwe word for “snake”. The county was originally part of Pine County, but was split off in 1858. The first settlers arrived in the area in the late 1850s, and the county was officially organized in 1866.
The county was largely rural until the late 19th century, when the railroad arrived and the logging industry began to boom. The county was also home to several small towns, including Mora, which was established in 1887.
