History

Douglas County was established in 1858, and was originally part of Pope County. The county was named after Stephen A. Douglas, a U.S. Senator from Illinois. The first settlers arrived in the area in the late 1850s, and the county was officially organized in 1866. The county seat was originally located in Osakis, but was moved to Alexandria in 1872.
