Brown County is located in the south-central region of Minnesota, and is bordered by Cottonwood County to the north, Watonwan County to the east, Martin County to the south, and Redwood County to the west. The county seat is New Ulm, and the county has a total area of 576 square miles.

History

Brown County was established in 1855 and was named after Joseph Renshaw Brown, a prominent politician in the state of Minnesota. The county was originally inhabited by the Dakota Sioux, and the first settlers arrived in the area in the mid-1800s. The first permanent settlement was established in 1856, and the county was officially organized in 1858.
During the American Civil War, Brown County was home to several regiments of the Minnesota Volunteer Infantry. The county also played a role in the Dakota War of 1862, with several battles taking place in the area.

Geography

Brown County is located in the south-central region of Minnesota, and is bordered by Cottonwood County to the north, Watonwan County to the east, Martin County to the south, and Redwood County to the west.
