Bena Summary
Bena, Minnesota is a small unincorporated community located in the northern part of the state, in Beltrami County. It is situated on the shores of Lake Bemidji, and is surrounded by the Chippewa National Forest. The population of Bena was estimated to be around 200 people in 2000.
History
Bena was first settled in the late 1800s by a group of Finnish immigrants. The town was originally known as “Finn Town”, and was later renamed Bena after the nearby lake. The town was officially incorporated in 1906.
In the early 1900s, Bena was a thriving logging and farming community. The town was home to several sawmills, a grist mill, and a creamery. The town also had a post office, a general store, and a school.
In the 1920s, Bena began to decline as the logging industry moved away from the area. The town’s population decreased, and many of the businesses closed.
Geography
Bena is located in the northern part of Minnesota, in Beltrami County. It is situated on the shores of Lake Bemidji, and is surrounded by the Chippewa National Forest. The town is located about 25 miles north of Bemidji, and about 75 miles south of International Falls.
The terrain around Bena is mostly flat, with some rolling hills. The area is heavily forested, and is home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, bear, and moose.
Economy
The economy of Bena is largely based on tourism. The town is a popular destination for fishing, hunting, and camping. There are several resorts and lodges in the area, as well as a few restaurants and stores.
