History

Stowe was first settled in 1720 by a group of German immigrants. The town was originally known as “Stauffen”, which is German for “stone”. The name was changed to Stowe in 1845. The town was incorporated in 1851.
Stowe was an important stop on the Reading Railroad, which ran through the town from 1839 to 1952. The railroad was a major factor in the growth of the town, as it allowed for the transportation of goods and people.

Geography

Stowe is located at 40°14'N 75°20'W (40.23, -75.33). It is situated in the southeastern part of Montgomery County, about 20 miles northwest of Philadelphia. The borough is bordered by Upper Pottsgrove Township to the north, Lower Pottsgrove Township to the east, Limerick Township to the south, and Pottstown to the west.
Stowe has a total area of 0.9 square miles, all of which is land. The borough is located in the Schuylkill River watershed.

Economy
