Spring City borough Summary
Spring City Borough is a borough located in Chester County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area.
History
The area that is now Spring City Borough was first settled in 1719 by a group of Quakers from Philadelphia. The town was originally known as "Springtown" and was incorporated as a borough in 1867. The name was changed to Spring City in 1875.
The town was an important center of industry in the 19th century, with several mills and factories located in the area. The most notable of these was the Spring City Woolen Mill, which was established in 1845 and operated until the early 20th century.
Geography
Spring City Borough is located at 40°10'17" North, 75°33'45" West (40.171445, -75.562545). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
The economy of Spring City Borough is largely based on tourism and small businesses. The borough is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, shops, and galleries. The borough also has a number of historic sites, including the Spring City Woolen Mill, which is now a museum.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,611 people, 1,072 households, and 690 families residing in the borough. The population density was 3,717.2 people per square mile (1,437.2/km2). There were 1,125 housing units at an average density of 1,567.2 per square mile (604.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.45% White, 0.77% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.42% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.19% of the population.
There were 1,072 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $36,250 versus $27,500 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $20,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
